Strategically Switzerland: Circle the Country with Ease

How to Travel by Train, Choose the Right Bases, and Experience the Alps Without Rushing

Switzerland is one of the easiest and most rewarding countries I have ever experienced. It was so easy to explore so many regions of the country with ease, but with intention.

This is a destination for couples and solo travelers who value efficiency, beauty, and breathing room. If you plan it well, Switzerland feels effortless.

  • Seamless train travel by train (no car required)

  • A balance of culture, nature, food, and shopping

  • Ideal for travelers who want structure without rigidity

  • Perfect for long weekends or multi-week itineraries

It gives you:

  • Unlimited trains, buses, boats

  • Stress-free airport and city transfers

  • Scenic routes included

  • No ticketing decisions mid-trip

Switzerland runs on precision. The Swiss Travel Pass lets you move through it smoothly.

Popular Train Routes & Times

To chose the trip that is best for you, here's a quick look at popular train routes and travel times. This quick list enabled us to plan a trip that allowed us to circle the country, starting and ending in Zurich.

  • Zurich → Geneva: 2h 44m

  • Zurich → Lucerne: 41m

  • Bern → Zurich: 55m

  • Interlaken → Lauterbrunnen: 20m

  • Interlaken → Grindelwald: 32m

  • Geneva → Zermatt: 3h 31m

You’ll spend more time looking out the window than checking your watch.

Our trip:

  • Flew in and out of Zurich

  • Zurich as a base city and then on to Interlaken

  • Interlaken as a base city and did day trips to Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald

  • Interlaken to Geneva

  • Geneva as a base city and an easy train ride back to Zurich to fly home

How to Choose Your Base Cities

Switzerland is best experienced by choosing smart bases, not hopping nightly.

Recommended Bases & Length of Stays

  • Zurich – culture, food, shopping, and a seamless arrival city

  • Interlaken – unmatched access to the Alps and Jungfrau region

  • Geneva – elegance, lake views, shopping, and refined dining

This combination gives you city energy, alpine drama, and relaxed sophistication. This pacing allows for sightseeing, hiking, biking, shopping, and even a little paragliding, and juggling snow balls.

  • Zurich: 3–4 nights

  • Interlaken region: 3–4 nights

  • Geneva: 2–3 nights

Best Time to Go

June is ideal. Snow still dusts the peaks, valleys are green, days are long, and crowds are manageable.
