Driving the Icefields Parkway: An Unforgettable Road Trip Through the Canadian Rockies

From turquoise lakes and towering mountains to an unexpected adventure in Jasper, our day on the Icefields Parkway was unforgettable.

There are scenic drives, and then there is the Icefields Parkway.

After spending our first full day exploring Banff, we were ready to venture farther into the Canadian Rockies. We had heard wonderful things about the Icefields Parkway, a spectacular stretch of highway connecting Lake Louise and Jasper National Park.

We planned to spend the day stopping at scenic overlooks, exploring a few short trails, and photographing the incredible mountain scenery. We had even mapped out where we would turn around before heading back to Banff. This is very important as the parkway is long, and however far you drive out, you must drive back. Also, there is no food or petrol along the way, so planning your day is essential.

And as much as I thought I had planned, our day didn't go exactly as we had anticipated.

While we saw some of the most beautiful scenery of our entire trip, we also learned a few lessons worth sharing with anyone planning to explore this remarkable stretch of the Canadian Rockies.

Starting the Day at Farm & Fire

Before heading into the mountains, we stopped for breakfast at Farm & Fire in downtown Banff.

This was our first visit, and it quickly became one of our favorite restaurants of the trip. We enjoyed it so much that we returned two more times before heading home.

I ordered the avocado toast with poached eggs, served on gluten-free bread. The generous helping of smashed avocado, fresh sprouts, balsamic drizzle, and perfectly prepared eggs made it one of the best versions I've ever had. The roasted potatoes were equally delicious, and I appreciated that they were prepared with olive oil rather than deep-fried.

With a great breakfast behind us and a full tank of gas, we were ready for a day in the mountains. Reminder: be sure to enter the Icefields Parkway with a full tank. A few petrol stations are in downtown Banff, and a couple are at the Lake Louise exit before you enter the Icefields Parkway.

The Icefields Parkway: A Scenic Drive Unlike Any Other

The Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93 North, stretches approximately 232 kilometers (144 miles) between Lake Louise and Jasper.

The drive is famous for its dramatic mountain peaks, glaciers, turquoise lakes, and incredible opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies. What struck me most was the scale of the landscape. The mountains seemed to extend endlessly in every direction. Around every curve was another spectacular view, and we frequently found ourselves pulling over simply to take photographs.

We had experienced beautiful mountain scenery throughout Europe and the United States, but the Canadian Rockies had a vastness that felt entirely different.

Peyto Lake: A Stop You Shouldn't Miss

One of our first major stops was Peyto Lake. After parking, we followed the relatively easy trail to the viewing platform, where we were greeted by one of the day's most spectacular sights. The lake's brilliant turquoise water looked almost unreal against the surrounding mountains. It's one of those places where you can stand quietly for several minutes, taking in the scenery and wondering how nature could create something so beautiful. The walk to the viewpoint was manageable, and the payoff was extraordinary.

If you're planning your own Icefields Parkway adventure, Peyto Lake deserves a place near the top of your list.

Exploring Waterfowl Lakes

Another favorite stop of ours was Waterfowl Lakes. Unlike some of the more popular viewpoints, this area offered an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the landscape at a different pace.

We took a relaxed walk toward a beautiful, clear river, enjoying the sound of the water and the surrounding mountain scenery. I particularly loved having time to get out of the car and experience the landscape rather than simply photographing it from the road.

It's easy to become so focused on reaching the next viewpoint that you forget to enjoy where you are.

Waterfowl Lakes was a wonderful reminder to do exactly that.

Our Unexpected Adventure to Jasper

Our original plan was to drive as far as Mistaya Canyon before turning around and returning to Banff. But when we reached the area and saw the crowded parking lot, we decided to look at our map provided by the parks system and reconsider our plans.

We noticed that the Columbia Icefield area appeared to be approximately 75 kilometers farther north. We assumed Jasper couldn't be much farther beyond that. So we decided to keep driving.

What we didn't fully appreciate was that entering Jasper National Park and reaching the town of Jasper are two very different things. And because cell service is extremely limited along the Icefields Parkway, we couldn't simply open Google Maps to check our assumptions.

By the time we realized the town of Jasper was another 105 kilometers past the Icefields Center (or end of the Icefields Parkway), we had to commit to going all the way.

We eventually arrived around 4 p.m., grabbed a late bite to eat, filled the gas tank, and prepared for the approximately three-and-a-half-hour drive back to our hotel. It was quite an adventure!

We spent more than seven hours driving that day, in addition to the time we spent exploring trails and taking photographs. Would I recommend doing the entire drive to Jasper and back in one day? Not necessarily.

We loved the scenery, but we underestimated the distances and how much time we would want to spend at each stop.

What We Learned About Planning the Icefields Parkway

Looking back, I would approach this day a little differently. The Icefields Parkway is a destination in itself, not simply a road connecting two towns. There are so many beautiful places to explore that it's impossible to experience everything in one day.

If you're staying in Banff and plan to return that evening, I recommend identifying your priority stops before you leave and deciding how far north you want to go.

Some beautiful places to consider include:

  • Crowfoot Glacier: A dramatic glacier visible from the highway.

  • Bow Lake: A beautiful mountain lake with opportunities for an easy walk.

  • Peyto Lake: One of the most spectacular viewpoints along the route.

  • Waterfowl Lakes: A peaceful setting for walking and photography.

  • Mistaya Canyon: A popular stop for experiencing the power of glacial water.

We also considered the Valley of the Five Lakes near Jasper, but by that point, we were too tired and had too much driving ahead of us to stop for another hike.

A Few Practical Tips for the Icefields Parkway

Start with a full tank of gas. Fuel stations are limited along the route, particularly outside the main tourist season.

Pack lunch and plenty of snacks. Dining options are sparse, and you don't want to sacrifice valuable daylight searching for a meal.

Download offline maps before leaving Banff. Cell service is unreliable or nonexistent along much of the drive.

Plan your turnaround point. Consider the time needed for stops, hiking, photography, and the return drive.

Check road and weather conditions. We traveled in early October, when mountain weather can change quickly. Snow and icy conditions are possible, even when the weather in Banff is beautiful.

Leave time to enjoy the scenery. Some of our favorite moments happened when we simply stopped, walked, and took in the surroundings.

Was the Icefields Parkway Worth It?

Absolutely. Despite our unexpected detour and longer-than-planned day, the Icefields Parkway was one of the highlights of our trip to Banff. The towering mountains, brilliant lakes, glaciers, and incredible landscapes were unlike anything we had experienced before.

Would I drive all the way to Jasper and back in one day again? Probably not.

But would I spend another day exploring the Icefields Parkway? Without hesitation.

Sometimes travel teaches you as much through unexpected moments as through perfectly planned ones. And this was certainly one of those days.
