Florence in One Perfect Day: Shopping, Art, and the Most Beautiful City Walks

Florence was our bridge between Rome and the Tuscan countryside — a single, beautifully full day that delivered art, fashion, food, and some of the most elegant city walking in Italy.

Rather than rushing through or turning it into an overnight stop, we arrived by train in the morning, spent the entire day immersed in the city, and then picked up a car in the evening to drive into the hills of Tuscany. It was one of the smartest decisions of the trip.

How We Arrived

  • Train: Frecciarossa from Rome to Florence Santa Maria Novella

  • Why it works: City-center to city-center, no airport hassle, effortless arrival

Morning: Florence on Foot

Start the day walking — Florence is compact, elegant, and endlessly photogenic.

Must-see stops (no rushing):

  • Florence Cathedral (exterior is enough for a one-day visit)

  • Piazza della Signoria

  • Palazzo Vecchio (exterior)

  • Wander the historic streets with no fixed route

Why Florence shines: The scale is humane. You feel surrounded by beauty without being overwhelmed.

Midday: Ponte Vecchio + River Walk

  • Walk across Ponte Vecchio

  • Stroll along the Arno River

  • Pause often — this city rewards stopping

This is a perfect window for:

  • Coffee

  • Gelato

  • Light people-watching

Afternoon: Shopping & Style

Florence is exceptional for shopping — refined, artisanal, and timeless.

Where to Shop

  • Via de’ Tornabuoni (luxury Italian fashion)

  • Side streets off the historic center for leather goods and boutiques

  • Artisan shops rather than souvenir-heavy streets

What’s Worth Buying

  • Italian leather accessories

  • Elevated wardrobe staples

  • Artisanal home goods

Pro tip: Florence shopping feels curated, not chaotic — perfect for travelers who value quality over volume.

Late Afternoon: Lunch + Final Wandering

  • Long lunch at a classic Florentine restaurant

  • One last city loop through your favorite streets

  • Final views of the Duomo as the light shifts

This is Florence at its best — relaxed, golden, and quietly stunning.

Evening: Tuscany Bound

  • Pick up rental car near Florence

  • Drive into the countryside as the sun sets

  • Arrive at Il Borro Estate for the next chapter

Emotionally, this transition is perfect. City → countryside → silence → wine.
